It may seem like there are lots of choices of formalwear for the groom on his wedding day. After all, tuxedos now come in a variety of styles and colors and it's possible to make a vest and tie out of any material you like.
The main determinant of style is the time of the wedding. An early wedding (before 2 p.m.) calls for a morning suit. This is the type of suit you seen on Englishmen on Derby Day (imagine My Fair Lady). The morning suit has a long coat, much like tails and you wear an ascot instead of a tie. It is similar to the stroller, which is generally called for if the wedding takes place in the afternoon (before 5 p.m.).
The stroller coat looks like a gray suit coat. The vest is a lighter gray. The pants are gray with a black stripe. The shirt has a straight collar and French cuffs. The tie is gray and black striped. We see a resurgence of daytime weddings. We see a lot more with morning suits and strollers than we have in a long time. We believe that part of the explanation for this is longer wedding celebrations. It's a day-long affair. They want to make it a big special event and have a lot of people enjoy it with them.
An evening wedding calls for full dress: a tuxedo or white tie and tails. The white tie, white vest and tails is the ultra formal outfit. The tuxedo, with the striped pants and black tie is still quite formal and striking. The tux coat has the rounded shawl collar. The two other types of collar found on formal wear are the notch collar, which looks pretty much like a normal suit collar, and the peak collar, which resembles that of a double-breasted suit. The only difference between a notch collared suit and a regular dark suit is the satin facing on the collar and the satin stripe down the leg. The shawl collar is unique to tuxedos. If a man chooses to buy a suit for formal occasions, the shawl collar is usually what he will choose. It's not like wearing a black suit. It looks fancy.
We advise registering the wedding party well in advance of the wedding. This means giving the names, styles, sizes, and such to the formal wear shop a few months before the big day. This assures that they will have on hand exactly what's needed.
Whether you go the traditional route or choose to get married in an electric blue suit with a psychedelic vest, it's your day too. Wear something that makes you feel special and important.
